Balogh, Thomas

   English economist of Hungarian origin. He studied economics and law at the universities of Budapest and Berlin and was later invited to the United States as a Rockefeller Fellow at Harvard University. During the 1930s he worked in France and Germany. In 1934 he was appointed a lecturer at University College, London and later at Balliol College, Oxford. During World War II he was chairman of the Mineral Development Committee. After the war he became deputy chief of a United Nations mission to Hungary. In the 1950s he served as advisor to the UN's Food and Agriculture Organization. Subsequently he became an advisor on economic affairs for the Labour government. In 1968 he received a peerage.
